Roddy Scheer is a journalist and photographer specializing in environmental issues, the outdoors and travel.

His latest book Oregon and Washington’s Roadside Ecology: 33 Easy Walks Through the Region’s Amazing Natural Areas came out in March 2022.

Roddy’s next book for Timber Press, Yellowstone & Grand Teton’s Best Nature Walks, will be available in the Spring of 2024. See some of the pics here and here.

Meanwhile, Roddy is researching and writing another forthcoming title for Timber Press tentatively titled Canyon Country’s Best Nature Walks, focusing on great short ecologically significant hikes throughout the Southwest’s Four Corners and beyond.

In May 2019, Falcon Press published the second edition of Roddy’s Hiking Waterfalls Washington: A Guide to the State’s Best Waterfall Hikes as part of a series of state-by-state waterfall hiking guidebooks. Roddy hiked to more than 70 waterfalls from the Pacific coast to the Idaho border. It was truly a labor of love. If you live in or are visiting Washington State, you should own a copy. A revised third edition, with new hikes and new photos, is due out in the fall of 2024. Roddy also revised another guidebook, Hiking Southern California, also from Falcon Press.

Meanwhile, Roddy’s fine art prints, which are for sale directly via this website, have been featured in two solo exhibitions. “Mt. St. Helens: 25 Years Later” ran for two years at the Coldwater Ridge Visitor Center at the Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. The exhibit featured photos he took of the recently re-awakened volcano in southwest Washington. Several of these shots and others appeared in KC Publications’ In Pictures book, Mount St. Helens: The Continuing Story.

His exhibit “A Day in the Life of Butter Island,” which featured images taken over a 24 hour period spent on one of Penobscot Bay’s most beautiful wild islands, sold out in one day. Additionally, his work is on display in a variety of corporate and retail locations around Seattle. He is represented in Maine by Gallery B in Castine, Maine.

When he is not out in the field taking pictures, Roddy runs EarthTalk, the non-profit publisher of the syndicated EarthTalk Q&A column and the Emagazine.com website. The organization’s weekly environmental Q&As reach some six million readers via a syndication network numbering more than 600 media outlets across North America. A collection of Earth Action Network’s “Earth Talk” answers was published in book form — EarthTalk: Expert Answers to Everyday Questions About the Environment — by Plume.

Roddy has served as a regular contributor at magazines including E-The Environmental Magazine, Seattle Magazine, Northwest TravelAmerican Photo, PhotoMedia, Wildflower and others — and is a three-time Society of Professional Journalists “Excellence in Journalism” Winner.

Roddy also leads kayak tours out of Agua Verde Paddle Club on Portage Bay at the foot of Seattle’s U-District. Sign up for a public tour and ask for Roddy to learn all about the cultural history and ecological relationships in Seattle’s inland waterways.
